Tylorstown finish devastating year on Top
Following a year of mixed emotions, Tylorstown Band are delighted to have finished the year as Champion Band of Wales 2016.  A title the band will share with Llwydcoed Band.
It was their winning performance of Paganini Variations in Merthyr on 26th November that saw the band not only secure the top joint league placing but also Best Bass Section and Best Instrumentalist for our Principle Euphonium Player Angela Westacott.
2016 has been an extremely emotional time for the band having lost committed bandsman and good friend Terry Hill who lost his life in June of this year when he was involved in a car accident on his way home from rehearsal.
Gary described the performance as…… “ a fantastic achievement for all connected with the band.  2016 has been a horrific year having lost Terry.  We needed to put in a performance that would make Terry proud and we did just that!  Every piece / contest has great memories of our friendship and the dedication that Terry had towards banding – Paganini was no exception to that.  My appreciation goes to all my players who overcome a day of difficult emotions, and who dedicated their performance to someone who will never be replaced…”
Whilst it will continue to be difficult, the band have secured the services of Neil Blockley on cornet, and Barry John on Bass Trombone to the ranks for 2017.  Both players bring a wealth of experience to the band, which was on display as part of the winning performance in November.
Finally, as with most Brass Bands the Christmas period is an extremely busy one, with many community concerts and the chance to share the Christmas spirit with the traditional carols.  Once again early December saw their own band hall transformed into a winter wonderland for the local community as the band held their annual Christmas Fayre in Tylorstown which included a visit from the Big Man himself, Santa.  This event is made possible every year by the generosity of several well established businesses in the South Wales area, whose continued financial support for this event is invaluable.  The band would like to formally thank all sponsors for their support and have a link on their website to the individual business

It is with great sadness that we have to inform our friends and supporters of the tragic passing of cornet player Terry Hill, who was in involved in a car accident on Thursday 16th June. Terry has been an integral part of the bands success over the years, assisting the band win its 2 National titles, His dedication and enthusiasm always evident and infectious, as Flugel soloist or wherever needed on the cornet bench.

He will be greatly missed not only for his great playing but also as a much loved friend to all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, but especially to Jo, Katie and Iwan.

Band will never be the same without you! Taken far too soon, Shine brightly Happy Chappy! Always in our thoughts x
Well it’s been a busy start to 2016 starting in January with Band Cymru recording, getting through to the Semi Finals, the Welsh Open - Porthcawl in February, The Welsh Regional Competition at the Brangwyn Hall in March, The Semi Finals of Band Cymru - Aberystwyth in April and more recently May saw us compete in the first of the Welsh League Competitions in Merthyr and The Spring Festival in Blackpool.  It's been a mixed bag of results but we are happy with the progress the band is making.
We are over the moon at the achievements of Rhondda Fach Youth Band who began competing in May 2015, they have won 4 consecutive Gold awards in the welsh league competitions, an amazing start for this new venture supported by Tylorstown and Ynyshir Bands.

Tylorstown Band - Champion Band of Wales 2011
2011 has been an enjoyable year for the Band on it's first year in 1st Section National Grading ! The band has gained 3rd prize in every competition entered with the exception of the Welsh Open where we were awarded the title of 'Most Entertaining Band'.  The consistency the band has shown throughout 2011 led them to achieve the sought after title of Champion Band of Wales.  It's entertaining nature was also recognised in Wychavon Festival of Brass where the Band not only finished 3rd but also achieved 'Most Entertaining Performance' status!  The band would like to thank all players that have contributed to the bands most successful period in it's history with thanks also being extended to our hard working MD Mr Gary Davies.
In December the band lost one of it's most loyal members Mr John Twohey, who passed away suddenly.  John played EEb Bass with the Band for many years and was a playing member of the band who won the National Championships of Great Britain in 2010.  John will be sadly missed by all his friends in the banding world.

NEW YEAR NEW SECTION
Tylorstown Band looks back on 2010 with pride as it’s most successful year in the bands history.  The run of form started at the Regional competition in the Brangwyn Hall Swansea in March - after drawing last, the band put in an impressive performance of Philip Harpers Kingdom of Dragons to gain the Welsh Champions title, a place at the Second Section National finals and promotion to First Section for 2011.
The band continued to build through the year gaining a 3rd prize at the welsh regional competition in Ebbw Vale in Championship section and 2nd Prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in August.  It was in September that the band made history – Becoming ‘National Champion Band of Great Britain’ for the first time.  Off a number 4 draw the band pulled out all the stops to secure the win impressing both adjudicators with the performance of Philip Wilby’s Psalms and Alleluias.
A 3rd prize at the Welsh regional competition in Blaenavon rounded off the year nicely with the band also gaining joint Runners up in the Welsh Championship Section League for 2010.  At the same competition, MD Gary Davies was also rewarded for his efforts and was presented with the prestigious Eric James Memorial Trophy as Welsh Conductor of the Year.
The band would like to thank all of its members for their hard work this year, it’s friends and supporters and local community for their on going support and kind words of congratulations on news of their Finals win and in particular the band would like to give a big thanks to Musical Director Gary Davies for his outstanding contribution to the successful year
